Celebrating National Farmers Market Week: A Local Story of Growth and Community
Monday, August 26, 2024
National Farmers Market Week, celebrated this year from August 4-10, 2024, recognizes farmers markets' vital role in our communities. These markets are more than just a place to buy fresh produce—they are hubs of local commerce, community engagement, and sustainability. The Long Prairie Farmers Market is a shining example of how these markets contribute to the local economy and community spirit.
A Growing Tradition in Long Prairie
Over the years, the Long Prairie Farmers Market has evolved, adapting to the needs of both vendors and customers. Erin May, owner of Wholesome Living Acres, has witnessed these changes firsthand, though she is relatively new to the market.
"As someone relatively new to the Long Prairie Farmers Market—this being only my second year—it's challenging to provide a detailed history. However, I can share that the market has undergone several changes recently, including moving locations a few times," says Erin. Despite challenges such as finding a permanent location, the market has attracted new vendors and a younger generation of farmers.
Wholesome Living Acres: A Journey Back to Health
Erin May and her family's journey into farming began 12 years ago, driven by a deep focus on health and wellness. Erin and her husband come from farming backgrounds and want to return to the roots of what a small family farm can achieve. Their venture, Wholesome Living Acres, is dedicated to growing the finest produce for their community, including a variety of lettuce, greens, microgreens, and herbs.
"What started as a personal quest for better health evolved into a thriving venture," Erin reflects. The farm's commitment to quality and health is evident in every product it brings to the market, offering the community fresh, nutritious options.
Supporting Local Entrepreneurs
The Long Prairie Farmers Market is more than just a place to sell produce; it's a platform for local entrepreneurs to share their stories and products. On a typical Friday, the market features about ten vendors, each offering something unique—from homemade baked goods to fresh flowers and craft items.
"As someone still relatively new, the market has provided an invaluable opportunity to meet people face-to-face and share the story of our business and farming practices," Erin shares. This sense of community is vital for the market's success, providing seasoned and new vendors with opportunities to grow their businesses.
Looking Ahead: The Future of the Market
As National Farmers Market Week highlights the importance of these markets, it also presents an opportunity for the Long Prairie Farmers Market to reflect on its growth and potential. Erin notes that while the market didn't have specific plans for the week, the enthusiasm of vendors and customers continues to drive its success.
"We encourage everyone to stop by and see what's happening. The Long Prairie Farmers Market is below Water Tower Hill and runs every Friday from 2:00 to 5:30 p.m. If we're there, we're ready to serve our customers. We hope to see you at the market!" Erin concludes.
A Community United by Fresh, Local Produce
National Farmers Market Week reminds us of the value these markets bring to our communities. In Long Prairie, the market is not just a place to shop—it's a place to connect, support local businesses, and celebrate the hard work of farmers like Erin May and her family. As the market grows, so does its impact on the community, making it a cornerstone of local life.
