July 30, 2026 Public Notice: Long Prairie Water Tower Rehabilitation Project

Project Summary

The City of Long Prairie will soon begin a rehabilitation project on the City’s water tower. This important maintenance project will extend the life of the structure, protect water quality, maintain system reliability, and help ensure the continued delivery of safe drinking water to residents and businesses.

The project includes cleaning and repairing the tower's interior and exterior surfaces, removing deteriorated coatings, making structural repairs as needed, and applying new protective coatings and an updated logo. 

Project Schedule

The anticipated construction schedule is highly subject to weather conditions and other factors that may affect coating application and curing. The water tower is scheduled to be drained the week of August 10th. Following draining, contractors will begin surface preparation by sandblasting, followed by repairs and coating work. The tower is expected to return to service around the end of September. The City will provide updates if significant schedule changes occur.

Water Conservation Is Important

While the water tower is offline, the City's water system will remain operational throughout the project; however, available water storage capacity will be significantly reduced. The City is requesting assistance in conserving water to help maintain adequate system pressure and emergency fire protection capacity throughout the project. Residents and businesses are asked to:

• NO irrigating lawns, athletic fields, and landscaped areas while the water tower is out of service.
• Flowers and gardens can be watered.
• Limit non-essential outdoor water use whenever possible.
• Use water efficiently to help preserve system capacity during the rehabilitation period.
• Possible Changes in Water Pressure

The water system will continue to operate while the tower is offline. However, residents may occasionally experience minor fluctuations in water pressure, particularly during periods of high-water demand. 

Potential Water Quality Changes

Operational changes associated with the rehabilitation project may occasionally result in minor, temporary changes in water clarity or appearance. If residents observe unusual water conditions or have concerns, they are encouraged to contact City Hall. 

Construction Noise, Dust, and Activity

Abrasive sandblasting will be used to remove existing coatings from the water tower prior to the application of new protective coatings. The contractor will utilize containment systems and dust-control measures designed to capture blasting materials and minimize impacts to surrounding properties. Residents in the vicinity of the tower may notice:

• Construction vehicles and contractor equipment.
• Noise associated with sandblasting operations, compressors, and other equipment.
• Occasional dust related to construction activities.

Construction activities are generally planned to occur between 7:00 am and 7:00 pm. However, to take advantage of favorable weather conditions and maintain the project schedule, the contractor may perform work on weekends. Residents may therefore notice construction personnel, equipment operations, and associated noise during weekend hours.

Safety Around the Project Site

The project will involve construction equipment, material staging, and elevated work activities. Residents are asked to stay clear of the work area and obey all posted construction signage to help ensure the safety of workers and the public.
